In the framework of this work, the Olympic transportation systems of the six most recent Olympiads were examined followed by a comparative analysis, which allowed for the extraction of interesting lessons concerning the better planning and organisation of the future Olympic transportation systems. The critical parameters for the development of the Olympic Transportation system identified concerned the on time implementation of infrastructure projects, the efficient management of traffic and parking, the improvement of public transport services, the appropriate demand management and the integrated co-ordination of the Olympic transportation system. It was concluded that an efficient transportation system constitutes not only a prerequisite for the organisational success of the Olympic Games but also an occasion for the upgrade of the city infrastructure and the quality of life.
