The objective of the current research was the assessment of the evolution of road safety in Greece over time. For that purpose, the change in the number of road crashes as well as the number of casualties (i.e. fatalities, serious injuries, slight injuries) was examined, using road crash data from the Hellenic Statistical Authority. During the last decade (2010-2020), an impressive reduction in the number of road fatalities was observed in Greece (54%). In addition, the results demonstrated that, in 2019, driving at high speeds was one of the most critical factors for road crashes in Greece, which was indicated by the high percentage (52%) of single vehicle fatalities. Furthermore, other major road safety problems were found to be the high rates of killed motorcyclists in Greece (36%) compared to the respective rate of the European Union (18%), as well as, the high rates of killed persons not wearing seat-belt and helmet.
