EDI (Electronic Data Interchange) defined as the transfer of structured data by agreed message standards from computer to computer by electronic means, is a service which will replace the traditional paper document exchange by electronic messages exchange. This replacement needs a transition period in order to find the appropriate technical solutions in international level and also to change user habits to a “zero-paper” situation that EDI introduces. The complexity of EDI problems is the chance for service companies, because they can offer simultaneously, many services bringing added value (standardisation, telecommunications, informatics). The future of EDI and EDI service companies is open, especially in the european single market of 1992.
