The objective of this research is the analysis of the road safety parameters on European motorways. Using data from the last decade (1999-2008) for 16 European countries, the number of fatalities is correlated with the main road safety parameters, such as the type of vehicle, the age of the fatalities and the lighting conditions. Exposure data (such as the length of the motorway network and the population) are also considered. The results of the analysis provide valuable support to decision makers towards improving the overall level of road safety in the European road network.
