This work deals with an important question for companies of goods transport : strategic issues deriving from the management of physical flow of goods and of information flow. This work is based on research carried out at big express transport integrators and proposes a theoretical scheme of the parallel functioning of the two flows as well as the different information systems necessary for the optimisation of the two flows in the production chain of goods transport. Based on this theoretical scheme, the relation between flows’ management and competitive strategy of the transport company is identified. It is proved that flows’ management inside the transport production chain can offer to transport companies opportunities for acquiring a competitive advantage. Companies willing to better exploit these opportunities should align the management of the two flows with their competitive strategy.
