The objective of this paper is the presentation of the Development of the 2nd Strategic Plan for the Improvement of Road Safety in Greece, 2006-2010, the implementation of which can lead to achieving the European road safety target of decreasing the number of fatalities in road accidents in 2010 by 50%, compared to 2000. The applied methodology was based on relevant international experience, properly adjusted to the requirements and special characteristics of Greece. The implementation of the 1st Strategic Plan for the improvement of road safety was evaluated and a macroscopic analysis of road accident factors in Greece was carried out. Additionally, all authorities and other organisations, which are involved in road safety in Greece, were identified and their potential for improving road safety was examined. A thorough review of the evolution of road safety in Europe was performed, emphasizing on contemporary national strategic plans and their evolution in the best performing countries in the field of road safety. The main target of the 2nd Strategic Plan for the Improvement of Road Safety in Greece was determined, the structure of the Plan was developed and a series of specific Action Programs was proposed that deal with all road safety factors (road users, road environment, vehicles, enforcement, social, legal and economical environment). Finally, an implementation plan was developed that includes specific proposals regarding legislation, information campaigns, timetables, monitoring and assessment of the implementation of the 2nd Strategic Plan for the Improvement of Road Safety in Greece.
