In this work the influence of the economic crisis in the number of road accidents in Greece and in Europe is investigated. For this purpose, road accident data during the crisis in both Greece and Europe were recorded. Then, the correlation of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and road accidents was investigated by examining the evolution of the two sizes as well as the annual change in the countries of the European Union. Finally, some interpretations regarding the evolution of the number of road accidents in relation to GDP were expressed and the period after the financial crisis and the role of the Hellenic Institute of Transportation Engineers and the State was discussed.
