Safety Tolerance zone calculation and interventions for diver – vehicle – environment interactions under challenging conditions

The main purpose of the i-DREAMS project is to setup a framework for the definition, development, testing and validation of a context-aware ‘Safety Tolerance Zone’ for driving, within a smart Driver, Vehicle & Environment Assessment and Monitoring System (i-DREAMS). Taking into account, driver background factors and driving task complexity risk indicators, a continuous real-time assessment will be made to monitor and determine if a driver is within acceptable boundaries of safe operation (i.e. Safety Tolerance Zone). Moreover, post-trip safety-oriented interventions will be developed. in order to motivate and enable human operators to develop the appropriate safety-oriented attitude.

During the workshop, results from the i-DREAMS project will be presented to participants. Particular emphasis will be placed on the aspects related to road safety. Additionally, a short live demonstration will be provided.

Societal Level Impacts of Connected and Automated Vehicles

The main purpose of the LEVITATE project is to develop a wide-ranging evaluation framework to assess the impact of connected and automated transport (CAT) on all aspects of transport and individual mobility as well as at societal level. This framework will be used to evaluate the impacts of CAVs on individuals, the mobility system and society using a wide range of indicators. The outcomes of Levitate project include a set of validated methods to measure the impacts of existing technologies and forecast that of future systems. The methods have been applied to a series of scenarios including those of the present day to provide a range of impact studies of new and future mobility technologies. Based on the Levitate approach a new Connected and automated mobility decision support tool will be developed to provide an evidential basis for future mobility policymaking.

During the workshop, the online LEVITATE Policy Support Tool (PST) will be showcased and explained (bring your laptops!). Additionally, results from the Levitate project will be presented to participants, together with specific case studies and the experience of working with participant cities.

Training Course: Aimsun Next Pedestrian Simulator for Modeling Mobility

A 3-hour Aimsun Next training course will be offered to a limited number of up to 50 researchers and practitioners. 

This training course guides you through the process of simulating pedestrians in an Aimsun Next microscopic simulation. You’ll learn the basics of the social force model, how to put together all the required pieces to run a pedestrian simulation and how to manage pedestrian flows interacting with other road users in a truly multimodal way.

Next, you’ll master handling conflicts between pedestrians and motorized vehicles at signalized as well as unsignalized intersections. You’ll also learn how to make pedestrians use public transportation and how to model their choice between walking and taking public transportation. Finally, you will evaluate the pedestrian simulation, examine its different applications, and learn how to extend the mobility modeling workflow (for example the possibility of using Dynamic Public Transport Assignment to get skims for the four-step model).

It’s important to note that the pedestrian model embedded in Aimsun Next is designed to increase the realism of urban studies modeling multimodal networks, so this training course is primarily aimed at practitioners and engineers with a strong focus on road networks. For modeling high-fidelity pedestrian flows inside terminals and other buildings, you’ll need to use Aimsun Next in conjunction with third-party tools, such as Legion’s pedestrian simulator.
